The electrodes do wear out. They have a guaranteed life of 1 year,
but the actual life is unknown as the current production version has not worn out yet in over 2 years
(the titanium wire will break when they fail). Two versions are available: a platinum plated titanium electrode, and
a premium version made from platinum clad niobium. The titanium version has about 3/4" of titanium exposed to the water.
The niobium version is fully plated with platinum (except at the very end where it is cut from the wire spool) so the niobium is not
exposed to the water. Please note: The Niobium version does not have a rectangle on the end. It has a large U-shaped wire; the surface area of the wire is the same as the rectangle it replaces. Sold as a pair.
